My Weekly Tune Up!
Recently, I was asked, “What helps you stay on track as a Real Estate Consultant, father, husband, and in every day stuff?” My one word answer was, “Accountability”.
For the past 17+ years, Dave, a friend of mine, and I have been getting together for breakfast. Why? Accountability. As the quote goes “As iron sharpens iron so does one man sharpen another.”
After all those years you may think Haven’t you run out of things to talk about? You guys probably do a lot of social things together or You must have tons of things in common and you and your wives must hang out.
Wrong...wrong...and wrong.
What’s interesting is at our weekly meetings there is always something to talk about. Life happens, and that is what we talk and pray about. Family issues, business, being a good father, a good husband, staying on track in what we feel is a reasonable time to devote to work, personal development with attitudes, faith, health, relationships, and sharing joys in life. We also work on keeping our guards up...the boundaries that help keep us on the “straight and narrow”. Boundaries like not having one-on-one friendships with the opposite sex, guarding our eyes and our hearts with the books, magazines, movies, and websites we view. To be careful with our thought life, our actions and words, and to not only be promise makers but promise keepers.
If you are looking for a life changing New Year’s Resolution, then commit to finding and meeting with a friend weekly. You, your kids, spouses and others in your sphere of influence will be blessed.
He or she doesn’t need to be your best friend...Dave and I don’t socialize a lot outside of our weekly morning meetings. Dave is into team sports, has his masters degree, works for Family Life Canada, hosts a TV show, and is a speaker at marriage counseling seminars across the country. I love individual sports, am a student with a Real Estate Marketing University, have been on TV once, and sweat when asked to speak in public.
Our closeness is our passion in becoming better fathers, husbands, employers, and people with integrity. It’s all progress...not perfection.
